Lucy Frazer MP and Ely Town Mayor Richard Hobbs were the Official Starters for Ely’s sixth annual potato race on Saturday.
The world’s only potato race is organised by Isle of Ely Produce to celebrate the region’s potato growers and the local harvest festival and is now in its sixth year.
28 teams took part and crowds lined the half mile course. More than £3000 was raised for local charities.
Isle of Ely Produce director Oliver Boutwood said: “It was lovely to see so many people coming out to support the teams today. We are happy to play such an important part in the community and will continue to invest in these types of events in the future. The event underlines our pledge to support the journey of the potato from the field to the fryer.”
Lucy Frazer MP said: “The great Ely potato race really sums up what being a community is all about. All ages coming together to support one another, to support local farming and to support local charities. Congratulations to Isle of Ely Produce and everyone who played a part in Saturday’s event – it was a privilege to be a part of.”
