Lucy hosted pupils from secondary schools in South East Cambridgeshire at the Cambridge Union for a debating workshop run by the charity Debate Mate.
Debate Mate was founded in 2007 in order to combat the problems of social immobility and a lack of employable skills amongst young people in the UK. Debating is an important skill for young people to have. It can give shy students confidence, and encourages them to get involved in current affairs.
Schools participating included Impington Village College, Ely College, Bottisham Village College, Linton Village College and Soham Village College. Students had a day of activities, culminating in two formal debates.
Linton Village College student Charlotte said:
"It was a great opportunity to learn the processes and skills that are needed to have a debate with other people. I learned to overcome my fears of public speaking and working under pressure and I had the opportunity to meet lots of lovely new people who I enjoyed debating with!"
