Following on from Rackham Primary School’s successful and newsworthy plastic waste campaign earlier in the year, Lucy Frazer MP, went to visit Oak Class who led the campaign.
Lucy said, “The children of Oak Class should be rightly proud of their achievement, not only to engage with this issue in the classroom but to take it beyond the classroom and raise the profile of plastic waste by calling businesses to account and calling on support from their MP! I was, of course, happy to support their cause and it was my pleasure to visit them just before the school holidays to congratulate them and their teacher, Mrs Ward, in person.”
The MP learned of the ‘Managing Without Plastic Challenge’ that the school community undertook recently. She also took part in a lively Q&A session with the pupils and talked about the Government’s new 25 Year Plan working to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste.
She explained to the pupils the various ways in which the government was tackling the issue of single use plastic – the consultation on a ban of plastic straws, drink stirrers and plastic stemmed cotton buds; a potential deposit return scheme so people get money back for recycling drinks containers; the banning of microbeads and the extension of the 5p plastic bag charge to all retailers.
