Internal Drainage Boards play a key role in protecting our businesses, homes and agriculture. They manage water levels in our area by pumping excess water through waterways, reducing flood risk to people and property and supporting our agricultural and environmental needs.
The Ely Group of Internal Drainage Boards, who I have visited and worked with previously, are usually funded exclusively by a levy on the district council. However, following an increase to their operating costs as a result of extraordinarily high energy prices, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has stepped in with £104,160 of additional funding to bridge the emerging gap in the council's budget.
Ultimately, interventions like this helped made it possible for East Cambridgeshire District Council to freeze Council Tax again in 2023-24 for the tenth year running.
