This morning, I opposed the Sunnica solar farm application at East Cambridgeshire District Council’s special planning meeting. The meeting was designed for the council’s Planning Committee to consider their official response to the draft development, as a consultee.
Whilst I understand the need for and support solar energy as an important means of decarbonising our country’s energy sector and strengthening our energy security, the scale and design of the Sunnica application is not appropriate.
I highlighted the impact of the project’s size on local villages (2500 acres); the planned use of best and most versatile farmland; and the extensive use of battery energy storage systems close to residential properties.
I am pleased that the committee joined me in unanimously opposing the project at the end of the hearing.
