Last week the UK agreed a major new trade deal with Japan. This is excellent news for the future of our trading relationship with one of the world’s largest economies.
British exports to Japan have grown by an average of 7.6% in each of the last five years, which has been very good news for the east of England in particular. Last year over 1,000 businesses in our region sent exports to the Japanese market. Collectively, these brought an additional £870 million into the UK economy.
Likewise, our constituency already feels the benefit of direct investment from Japan. In 2018, I was delighted to attend the opening ceremony of the Dojima Sake Brewery at Fordham Abbey, which is the first of its kind in the UK.
I look forward to ever-closer economic ties between the UK and Japan in the years ahead, which should help to create additional jobs and growth in our area.
