On Friday, I went to Ely Police Station to meet with Superintendent Gallop and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Darryl Preston, to discuss police recruitment and our approaches to local crime.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary now has a record number of officers in its ranks, with 1,732 at the end of March 2023, which has coincided with a significant cut in crime since 2019:
Residential burglary is down by 44%
Bike theft is down by 49%
30 county lines have been dismantled
Hare coursing is down by 40% after my successful campaign for the expansion of Cambridgeshire’s Rural Crime Team and for tougher sentencing nationally
I also welcomed the opportunity to join a patrol around Ely city centre with just a couple of the officers who work bravely and tirelessly to keep our communities safe.
