Students from King’s Ely and across South East Cambridgeshire came to Parliament recently for work experience. As part of the day’s activities, the group had a tour of Parliament, attended Treasury Oral Questions and sat in on several Select Committee hearings. The most popular was the Women and Equalities Select Committee, which took oral evidence on girls and women in education. Other sessions included the International Development Select Committee which was focused on safeguarding in the humanitarian sector and the Justice Select Committee, whose evidence session covered pre-legislative evidence on the draft victims bill.
Later in the day, the students undertook a casework session with my staff where they discussed the sorts of issues constituents get in touch with me about and the response process. The group also scrutinised my social media with members of my staff, giving me feedback on what they like to see on Facebook and Twitter and looking at the social media accounts of other MPs to see what they post.
The interesting part of the day for me was taking part in a Q&A with the group, where they quizzed me about my role as an MP and a Minister, asking me questions about many aspects of the job, the switch from law to politics and aspects of government policy such as the British Bill of Rights, immigration and how debates in Parliament work.
I am really delighted to hear that many of the students enjoyed their day, with one remarking how special it was to spend time in Parliament.
