I was honoured to deliver a keynote address at a conference focusing on modern slavery, arranged and hosted by G’s Fresh in Barway.
Earlier this month in Wisbech a man was found guilty of modern slavery offences and sentenced to over 7 years in prison.
As a Government we are committed to tackling the heinous crime of modern slavery; ensuring that victims are provided with the support they need to begin rebuilding their lives and that those responsible are prosecuted.
Through the Modern Slavery Act, the UK is the first country in the world to ensure that businesses report on the steps they have taken to tackle modern slavery. It has also become the first country in the world to require supply-chain transparency. Key commercial organisations with a high turnover, are now required by law to publish an annual modern slavery statement.
I support these efforts, and am very grateful to G’s Fresh for bringing together businesses, government officials and representatives of the police, to raise awareness of modern slavery and its dreadful impact on people’s lives so that we can tackle this problem and stamp it out.
