I recently met with representatives of Greater Anglia and Network Rail to discuss problems experienced by residents across Cambridgeshire in recent months.
Greater Anglia has now completed the roll-out of new trains on the Newmarket to Cambridge line. The new stock is comprised of three and four carriage trains, and I have been assured that this should address problems with the overcrowding. As many will know, software problems caused some trains to be unreliable, resulting in delays and the cancellation of services. Greater Anglia tell me that they are working with the train manufacturers to overcome these problems, and expect the problems to have abated within 4-6 weeks.
In addition, due to some possible safety problems on the tracks identified by Network Rail, precautionary measures such as speed limits had to be imposed in December, leading to further delays, and the cancellations of services through Dullingham. However, as of the 16th of December, the line between Newmarket and Cambridge was been re-opened.
As your MP, I will be monitoring developments closely to make sure that services do return to normal. I’ll also do all I can to secure more frequent services in the years ahead. I’m supporting the Newmarket Rail Vision, which envisions a half-hourly rail service from Newmarket to Cambridge including stops at Dullingham and Kennett, and the restoration of the loop for services between Ely, Soham, Newmarket, and Cambridge
