Recently I met virtually with Baroness Brown, Chair of the Independent Commission on Climate Change for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
The Commission was set up by James Palmer, the Mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and will set out recommendations on how our area can tackle climate change and achieve its ambition of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Commission aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and protect and enhance green spaces.
Specifically, the Commission will focus on:
- reviewing the area’s carbon footprint and how it can be reduced
-recommending specific targets, where possible, based on the science
- recommending micro level actions and ways of empowering individuals and firms to get involved
- recommending actions within the agricultural sector
- assessing and making recommendations about the risks and opportunities of climate change for the Fens
- examining the potential of the hydrogen economy in our region
- assessing the implications of climate change for natural capital
